If you've ever passed an intricate-looking trellis (say, cris-crosses or even the person's name or initials spelled out in plants), you've probably wondered, "How did s/he do that?"
Actually, it's not hard to train plants to grow in the direction you want...if you pick the right plants. The technique is called "espalier" and involves planting flat against a wall. Stragglers can be cut away while your trellis is "forming" in its growth pattern along the wires you've installed. Before long, voila: YOU'RE the one people are walking past and wondering about. "How did she DO that?"
