Beautiful Backyard Ponds: Yes You Can

A pond in the yard is peaceful, lovely and brings to mind fairy princesses leaning over for a kiss from up-and-coming frogs. (And who doesn't love a good fairy tale?)

They can be a wonderful addition to one's garden, but...ouch, can you afford to put one in?

According to this article from Empress of Dirt (don't you love that name?), yes you can! And you can fit it to suit the space you have, as well as your own unique style. This sounds like the best of all possible worlds, so if you're considering going this route, check out the gorgeous garden pond ideas in the post!

While you're dreaming your little dream of your gorgeous garden pond to come, keep the  following in mind:

1. If you're really looking to save money, you'll want to do all the digging yourself. This can be labor intensive, so swap an IOU for future yard work with a neighbor or have a "pond party" with friends taking turns helping out while you feed them some fabulous barbecue. Have drinks handy too!

2. Stagnant water can attract pests such as mosquitoes and may become scummy very quickly. Installing a pump is always a good idea.

3. Children and pets may accidentally wander into your pond and be harmed. Consider a pond cover for nighttime or when you're not at home (work, vacation, etc.).

4. If you're not sure what you're doing, a kit can be helpful. If you're more confident, you can create your pond piecemeal, but be sure to do your homework first so you don't make mistakes along the way and have to re-dig and re-install.

5. If you're worried about stagnation and drawing in pests, consider a waterfall, which will keep things moving externally down into the pond as well as within it (i.e. a pump).

6. Rocks are perfect for edging and will blend your pond into the rest of your yard or garden visually, as if the pond naturally occurred right there.

7. You'l need to populate your pond. Purchase fish and plants that do well in small areas.

Enjoy!
