10 Amazing HACKS for Vertical Gardeners

July 28, 2016

Seems we're hacks-crazy lately! But we couldn't resist THESE awesome ideas. Get ready, get set...get vertical gardening with these genius hacks.

1. Recycled Tire Vertical Planter

Have an old tire lying around? Drill holes in the bottom for drainage. Paint the entire tire a pretty color. Hang on the wall and fill the bottom trench with dirt and mulch. Plant your flowers. (image: backtotheroots.com)

2. Gutter Wall Planter

Old gutters get new life with this cool, space-saving idea. Drill holes intermittently along the gutter. Paint if you'd like, or leave "rustic" and distressed. Fill the gutters with dirt and place plants at intervals. (image: countryliving.com)

3. Shoe Organizer Herb Garden

This idea has been making the rounds on home improvement sites, gardening blogs and of course, Pinterest! It's so easy. Plant herbs in the pockets. Hang and watch your garden grow. (image: pinterest.com)

4. Cute Boots

We have another adorable hanger for you - and like #3 above, it's THE hot way to "cute up" your space while SAVING space! Paint old rain boots in fanciful colors. Slice holes in the bottom for drainage. Hang, plant and wait for the compliments! (image: ananasa.com)

5. Potato Sack Hack

This is so easy. Fill the bottom of an old, well-aerated sack with mulch (about 12" deep). Insert cut pieces of potato. Add more mulch and more potato pieces. Continue to the top. You'll get pounds of potatoes in just a few square feet of space. (image: vertical-vegetable-gardening-ideas.com)

6. Kitschy Dresser Drawers

As with most of the hacks we've listed so far, be sure to drill holes in the bottom of each section to provide drainage. For a truly kitschy look, DON'T refinish the drawers - leave them distressed. Fill the boxes with your favorite small flowers or with herbs. Shown here: succulents. (image: grizzlybearmodern.com)

7. Space-Saving Crates

Tip: Ask your local stores whether they have any old wooden crates they were about to discard. Rather than go through the trouble of breaking them up and discarding, they'll give them to you. Stack the crates and nail securely. Here, a cool checkerboard style is shown. (image: littlegreendot.com)

8. Cool Coke Bottles

Recycle plastic bottles yourself rather than sorting them for recycling day. Cut a rectangle out of the top of each bottle. Attach the bottles to a wall, screen or any sturdy vertical surface. Fill. (image: thedirt.com)

9. Fun and Fanciful "Blooming" Ladder

Be careful if you have children or curious pets. Otherwise, go ahead and use this adorable, whimsical idea. Simply set up an old ladder and place plants on the steps. So simple, so cute, so space-saving. (image: smalltownrambler.com)

10. Upside-Down Planter

Certain plants take better to this idea; tomatoes happen to be one. Cut or drill holes in the bottom of a 5-gallon bucket. Add dirt and your tomato babies (or seeds). Hang in a sunny locale. (image: 1001gardens.org)
